Answering the Call for Help

Say the word “help” and IUPUI Upward Bound students ALWAYS come through! The UB family’s spirit of giving kicked off last year by participating in worthy causes right in “our backyard” and around the community. UB has donated several times to IUPUI’s Paw’s Pantry, a food pantry that provides assistance to all of IUPUI’s students, faculty and staff, and those in the community that experience food insecurities.

We are fortunate to be able to give to such a great cause right here on our own campus. Unfortunately, Mother Nature was not nice to our friends in Houston, so UB again gathered donations for Hoosiers Helping Houston to extend our giving even further. While the Red Cross was already on the ground helping our neighbors, media outlets in the Indianapolis area teamed up for Hoosiers Helping Houston. During one of our scheduled Academic Themed Saturdays (ATS), UB students showed up and once again responded to Houston’s needs with the requested donations of bottled water, diapers, and baby wipes.

Giving is not just something that should take place during the holiday season – it is whenever that call for “help” comes in.

The donations were packed up and dropped off at a local Kroger store to head south where they were so desperately needed and appreciated. Some of us can remember the excitement of getting that special toy during the holidays, so for the second year in a row, UB participated in the WRTV6 Toy Drive to ensure that kids from the Indianapolis area could experience that same joyous feeling! How fitting that our donation drive fell on

Giving Tuesday, when we are encouraged to give our time, talent, or treasure to local charities and non-profit organizations. Without hesitation, our students, parents, and guardians gave from their hearts and wallets.

And we are not finished yet! We are working on getting a box of collected toiletries, food, and other supplies to our neighbors in Puerto Rico who took a direct hit from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Giving is not just something that should take place during the holiday season – it is whenever that call for “help” comes in, and we are proud of our UB family for the help and support they give to others.
